What is a carotid artery ultrasound and why is it performed?
A carotid artery ultrasound allows assessment of vessel patency and helps detect narrowing (stenosis) and atherosclerotic plaques.
Why is ultrasound of the carotid and vertebral arteries performed?

How is the examination performed?
The ultrasound is painless and typically takes 15–30 minutes. The patient lies on their back while the doctor applies gel to the neck and moves the probe over the examined area.
At Dobro Clinic, duplex scanning of the brachiocephalic arteries (BCA) is used, allowing evaluation of both vascular anatomy and blood flow velocity.

How to prepare for the procedure
No special preparation is required:
- you may eat and drink as usual;
- continue taking prescribed medications;
- it is advisable to avoid smoking and coffee for 1–2 hours before the procedure for more accurate results.
How often should the examination be performed?
The recommended frequency depends on your health condition and clinical indications.
- for patients at risk of cardiovascular diseases: once every 1–2 years;
- in case of diagnosed conditions — as prescribed by the treating physician.

Indications
It is important for patients to understand why ultrasound of the carotid and vertebral arteries is performed. The purpose is to monitor the condition of the blood vessels and reduce the risk of serious complications. Carotid ultrasound has virtually no contraindications and is safe even for pregnant women and children. In rare cases, an acute inflammatory skin condition in the neck area may be a temporary limitation. The examination is recommended if the following symptoms or conditions are present:
- recurrent headaches or migraines;
- episodes of dizziness;
- deterioration of vision;
- transient ischaemic attacks;
- diabetes mellitus with vascular complications;
- sudden fluctuations in blood pressure;
- impaired function of the limbs (numbness, weakness in the arms, legs, or fingers);
- fainting or pre-fainting episodes;
- injuries to the neck or spine;
- osteochondrosis;
- preparation for vascular surgery.
